Have you ever just taken the time to reflect on the little blessings God sends your way on a daily basis? Well, I thought of a jewel just today, in fact. Drinking coffee with my friends has always been one of my favorite activities. So, God orchestrated an opportunity for me to start leading worship for one of my dear friends’ Bible study at the Red Eye Coffee shop. http://www.re3eye.com He knew I needed a comfortable environment, in great company, to help me get over my jitters of playing in public. So, God combined coffee, worship, and Bible study into one neat little package. I don’t want to overlook God’s goodness to me, and when I count my blessings it’s a daily reminder of His love.
God is not like some genie in the sky granting wishes all the time, though. Sometimes, blessings just fall into our laps, but often times we have to wait patiently before receiving a blessing. Hebrews 6:7-8, says, “For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.” (Jer. 17;5-8, Ps. 1:3-4). A farmer must till, fertilize, and irrigate his soil in order to produce a good crop. Even then, as part of cultivating his crop, he must: plant seeds at proper seasons; eliminate pests; and pull weeds to protect his crop up until harvest. If he wasn’t diligent, he would have nothing to show for it. Indeed, in the same way, God is delighted by us when we trust in Him by faith, one day at a time, one step at a time. When we become saturated by God’s words, we spring forth life and deep spiritual growth, and we can’t help but bear fruit that will last. Our desires must match up to His desires, our thoughts to His thoughts, our ways to His ways. When we are so in tune to God’s will for us, we desire nothing more than to please Him. Then, in finding favor with God, we are sure to reap a harvest of blessing. (Gal. 6:8-9)
In Heb. 6:11-12, we see that blessing, “We want each of you to show the same diligence to the very end, so that your hope may be fully assured. 12Then you will not be sluggish, but will imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.” Yes, we do receive a blessing when promises are fulfilled, yay! But, we will also gain a continuing blessing of HOPE as a reward for our diligence. Amen! So, we don’t have to walk around feeling defeated when trials come like a deserted field of thorns. God’s blessings far outweigh any trials we will ever have to face. We can continue to be faithful, and confident knowing we have a hope in our calling. “having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,” Eph. 1:18; Ps. 27:13; Phil. 1:6 We should not only count our blessings, because it gives us hope in our calling, but we have a blessed hope in a God who is faithful, and whose hope springs eternal. I am so thankful for the many blessings God has bestowed on my life–too many to count. So, I urge you to look for God’s blessings in your life, big and small, and praise Him for them all!
